In 1973 the Holden Family purchased their current home furnishings store premises, which are an amalgamation of Number 11 Castlegate and Central Buildings, Middlegate.

Number eleven Castlegate is one of the most famous buildings in Newark. To find out more about the history of this Grade 2 Listed building, visit our Number eleven page or call into the store to see this beautiful building in the flesh.

The Castlegate premises were originally purchased for use as a furniture warehouse and it was not until thirteen years later that the family managed to purchase the row of shops on Middlegate, known as Central Buildings, and convert them to form one large retail unit running between the two main streets. The brand new store was opened by Peter Bowles, the actor, on 1st March 1986 and was greeted enthusiastically by locals who have supported it ever since.

The company now draws customers from a wide area and is happy to deliver free of charge within 35 miles or to quote very reasonable rates for more distant deliveries.

1995 saw further major redevelopment with the acquisition of adjoining premises on Middlegate and the opening of our Curtain and Lighting department. The refurbishment of Number eleven, along with the aquisition of the Middlegate premises grew our store to over 14,000 square feet of showroom space.

The closure of the store for two weeks and a complete gutting of the whole Middlegate premises in 2002 has meant that Holdens of Newark continues to lead the market in the provision of home furnishings to Newark and its surrounding area. This is a position the family and directors strive to maintain in the twenty-first century.

One fairly recent change, which took place in May 2007, was the decision to discontinue our lighting ranges and expand our soft furnishings department. The curtain and blind galleries have been moved into the main store and in their place is now our brand new modern furniture concept department, Studio H.

2012 saw a complete internal internal and external makeover of the store.

A new logo and colour scheme was introduced with exciting lighting on the outside of Castlegate. The internals were revamped with the addition of a brand new carpet and flooring area and the introduction of many exciting new furniture and bed ranges.
